01.07.2025, Skopje – The Economic Chamber of North-West Macedonia held a meeting with the Ambassador of Japan to Skopje, Her Excellency Mrs. Setsuko Kawahara, as part of the ongoing efforts to deepen international economic cooperation and create new development opportunities.

Ambassador Kawahara was welcomed by the President of ECNWM, Mr. Mendi Qyra, Executive Director Mr. Durim Zekiri, Vice President Mr. Shpresim Tairi, and members of the Managing Board, Mr. Menderes Kuçi and Mrs. Qanije Selimi.

In his remarks, the President of ECNWM, Mr. Mendi Qyra, expressed the deep respect for Japan and the potential it offers for economic cooperation. He emphasized that ECNWM remains committed to the further development of local businesses through collaboration with countries in the region and beyond, highlighting interest in access to Japanese training and expertise as a proven model for growth and advancement.

During the discussions on the needs of the business community, the Executive Director of ECNWM, Mr. Durim Zekiri, underlined the need of member businesses for know-how from Japan, especially in the fields of technology and innovation, describing this as a still untapped potential. Mr. Zekiri also noted that 20 years ago, the trade exchange amounted to €21.5 million, of which around €2 million was export to Japan, while last year exports reached €1.6 million and imports €128 million – figures that indicate a growing trade exchange, but also a decline in exports and a significant increase in imports.

Mrs. Selimi also raised the topic of financing opportunities for businesses, with the aim of facilitating access to funds and supporting the growth and development of companies.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Kawahara expressed her willingness to support the establishment of direct contacts between Japanese companies and those from North Macedonia, based on mutual respect and the building of trust as the foundation of any successful cooperation.

The member of the Managing Board, Mr. Menderes Kuçi emphasized that loyalty is one of the most important attributes characterizing ECNWM and its business community, underlining their seriousness and commitment to building sustainable international relationships.

At the conclusion of the meeting, it was agreed to establish a regular communication channel for the exchange of information on economic cooperation opportunities, including participation in activities and support for enhancing the capacities of local companies.
